Description
These 1911 Scrollwork grips combine unfinished European walnut, a relief-carved leaf-pattern scroll across the top and bottom of each panel, a checkered oval in the center, and a silver Colt medallion seated flush at the heart of the design. Built for Colt 1911 Government, Colt Commander, and Government-clone owners who want hand-finished panel detail with the iconic Colt branding, a presentation-grade build that suits collector pistols, dress carry, and gift sets for shooters who appreciate fine grip craftsmanship.
What is scrollwork on 1911 grips?
Scrollwork is a relief-carved decorative pattern of intertwined leaf, vine, and acanthus shapes, a tradition borrowed from 19th-century European firearms engraving. On 1911 grip panels, the scroll pattern is machined directly into the wood face at the top and bottom edges, with the central grip area left flat (often checkered) for hand contact.
The result: visual depth, dimensional shadow play under lighting, and a presentation aesthetic that flat or simply-checkered panels can’t deliver. The silver Colt medallion centered in the checkered oval becomes the focal point, framed by the scroll detail.
Why unfinished walnut for scrollwork grips?
Unfinished walnut lets the buyer apply the finish that suits the build, hand-stain for color depth, oil for low-sheen patina, lacquer or polyurethane for high-gloss protection, or wax for a soft natural finish. The bare walnut absorbs finish evenly because the surface hasn’t been factory-sealed. Walnut also reads especially well with scroll patterns, the warm grain plays under the relief shadows in a way rosewood (with its darker, denser color) doesn’t always show as clearly.
Construction and fitment
CNC-machined from kiln-dried European walnut with the scrollwork, checkered oval, and medallion seat carved directly into the wood face. The silver Colt medallion is inlaid flush from the back with the raised Colt logo on polished silver. Ambi safety cut included.
