Description
These 1911 walnut grips are CNC-machined from kiln-dried walnut blanks, sanded to 220 grit, and shipped completely raw — no stain, no sealer, no clear coat. The panel surface combines machined checkering on the trigger-finger zone and rough texturing on the palm side, separated by a swooping carved curve cut directly into the wood face. A blue-enameled Colt medallion is inlaid flush from the back with raised lettering on enamel — sits level with the wood, no snag points.
Why buy unfinished 1911 walnut grips?
Unfinished walnut gun grips give the builder complete control over the final look. The wood hasn’t been sealed at the factory, so it absorbs stain evenly and holds finish without lifting or peeling. Common finishing options include hand staining for color matching, tung oil or linseed for a natural low-sheen patina, lacquer or polyurethane for gloss protection, wood burning, laser engraving, and hydrographic dipping. If you want grips that match your exact build, these are the starting point.
The dual-texture surface explained
Standard checkered grips run one texture across the entire panel. These 1911 wood grips split the surface into two functional zones divided by a carved curve: checkering on the trigger-finger side for index control, rough texturing on the palm zone for recoil retention. Two grip feels in one panel, no tradeoff between control and comfort.
The blue Colt medallion
The blue-enameled Colt medallion is inlaid flush into the panel — not surface-mounted, not raised. It sits level with the wood face with no edges to catch on clothing or holster. The blue medallion is a recognized Colt 1911 variant that suits Government and Commander restoration builds and any custom pistol built around a blue color accent.
